The Hill Companies

After earning his BSBA from Georgetown University (’67) and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business (’69), Paul J. Hill spent nearly a decade in the investment banking industry before becoming the third generation to lead The Hill Companies. His leadership and strategic direction have served as a catalyst for diversifying The Hill Companies and the province's employment base. The Hill Companies now operate in the areas of real estate, surety, insurance, media, oil and gas, and manufacturing in both the United States and Canada. Paul’s extensive network within the North American business community facilitates his ability to aggressively seek unique business opportunities.

He acquired the controlling interest in Crown Life, became Chairman, and moved it to Regina. This represented 1200 jobs and expanded the GDP of the province by 2% and the city by 10%. He was also the founding chair of Boardwalk REIT and the Regina Airport Authority, as well as several other boards in Canada and the US, including North Canadian Oils, Canada Trust, Environmental Support Systems, US Forest Products, and the Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club. He also served on the Senate of the University of Regina and Notre Dame College, as well as the boards of the Manitoba Theatre and the Regina Symphony.

He has been actively involved in public policy through his board participation with Conference Board of Canada, The Saskatchewan Institute of Public Policy, The Investment Dealers Institute, The Fraser Institute, The C.D. Howe Institute, The Business Council of Canada, The Asia Pacific Foundation, The Canada Arizona Business Council, The Canadian Institute Woodrow Wilson Centre in Washington, DC, and the Business Council of Canada. Also, he currently serves on the boards of the Patrons of the Arts of the Vatican Museums and the Papal Foundation. He has served on the advisory boards of the Ivey School of Business at Western University, the Paul J. Hill School of Business at the University of Regina, and the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University.

Paul and his wife, Carol, are involved in numerous charitable projects, including founding the “One Life Make a Difference Foundation”, which focuses on helping underprivileged, inner-city Regina children who have a high percentage of becoming dropouts. Twenty students at a time are selected to attend The Mother Teresa Middle School (grades 6–8). Many of these students have academic skills equivalent to kindergarten to grade 3 level, and a significant number are at risk of dropping out or becoming involved in the criminal justice system. While Canada has several successful programs, this is the only one with consistently measurable and proven outcomes.

Honours include: the Order of Canada (2015), the Saskatchewan Order of Merit (2017), the King’s Coronation Medal (2025), Queen’s Golden (2002), Diamond (2012), and Platinum (2022) Jubilee Medals, Knight of St. Sylvester (2010), Canada 125 Medal, National Philanthropy Award (Paul and Carol, 2011), CTV Citizens of the Year (Paul and Carol, 2014), Jr. Achievement Business Hall of Fame (2014), Saskatchewan Chamber Business Leader of the Year (2014), Red Cross Humanitarians of the Year (Paul and Carol, 2017), and the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame Mother Theresa Humanitarian Award (Paul and Carol, 2015). Paul and Carol were the first to be honoured for their charity work at the RCMP Charity Ball. Paul also holds honorary doctorates from the University of Regina and the University of Western Ontario.

Paul and Carol are passionate about their relationships with their five children, in-laws, twelve grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
