Harvard Developments Inc. along with project partner Stantec participated in the Regina Food Bank’s 2013 Canstruction project. The sculpture titled ‘Hope Blooms’ was inspired by a Ted Talk delivered by Rob Mattox. Mattox believes that creating hope is an effective way to reduce poverty and that individuals are able to fight poverty by practicing three habits of hope: CREATE, CONTRIBUTE, COMMUNITY.
The Regina Food Bank carries out these habits daily. Programs such as the Adult Centre for Employment and Readiness Training (ACERT) teach people to CREATE. Individuals are given the opportunity to CONTRIBUTE by volunteering and donating non-perishable food items. The Community Services Village also generates a sense of COMMUNITY. There’s no doubt about it! The staff at the Regina Food Bank live by their mantra ‘Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope’.
Following in their footsteps, ‘Hope Blooms’ was created from the ground up. Similar to a flower, the Regina Food Bank adds colour and vibrancy to people’s lives and has established roots in Regina.
‘Hope Blooms’ is comprised of 2347 cans of tuna, salmon, potatoes, chicken noodle soup and green beans. The sculpture is currently on display at the Cornwall Centre. For more information on Canstruction please visit the organization’s official website: http://canstruction.org/
